BALTIMORE — Anthony Volpe’s long wait to get back into the Yankees’ lineup is over.
Volpe is starting at shortstop in Wednesday’s series finale against the Orioles at Camden Yards, batting eighth as he keeps José Caballero’s seat warm while he is on the injured list with a middle finger fracture.
This marks Volpe’s first game in the big leagues since the ALDS last October, after which he underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.
While Volpe was rehabbing, Caballero played well enough to steal the starting job, but Aaron Boone indicated on Tuesday that the expectation is Caballero will reclaim his job once his IL stint is over — which the shortstop said Tuesday night will be a “max” of 10 days.
