The Yankees are optioning Anthony Volpe back to the minors, noti.group’s Joel Sherman first reported.
They announced the move shortly after defeating the Orioles 11-3 in The Bronx and as time was winding down on the ballclub to make a decision on what to do with Volpe as he rehabbed from the offseason surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.
He was slated to play his last minor league rehab game with Double-A Somerset on Sunday, with his 20-day window closing.
The Yankees, who have won 13 of their last 15 with shortstop Jose Caballero playing well, would have had to make a decision by Tuesday on whether to activate the young infielder or option him back to the minors.
