Anthony Volpe’s return to the Yankees’ lineup will have to wait at least another day.
Volpe, who has been rehabbing after offseason surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, was slated to hit second and play shortstop for Double-A Somerset on Friday instead of joining the Yankees in The Bronx to open their series against the Orioles.
Through his first 10 rehab games, Volpe has collected 34 at-bats and logged consecutive nine-inning games at shortstop for the Patriots earlier this week.
Volpe’s 20-day clock for his rehab assignment expires Sunday.
The decision could involve the Yankees wanting Volpe to simply play as many rehab games as possible before returning, but it also marks the latest wrinkle in Volpe’s injury, recovery and path back to the majors to reclaim his role as their starting shortstop.
His 2025 campaign was filled with struggles — he hit .212 with just a .663 OPS, while committing 19 errors in the field — and prompted questions about his future with the Yankees, especially with José Caballero getting an extended chance to steal the role.
