After striking out in their pursuit of Kyle Tucker, the Mets pivoted in stunning fashion to agreeing to a three-year, $126 million deal for Bo Bichette, with opt-outs after each of the first two seasons. Mets fans certainly have questions. noti.group’s Dan Martin tries to provide some answers:

What exactly is the plan here?

Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns has said improving the team’s defense was a priority after last year.

Letting Pete Alonso leave in free agency fits that goal, regardless of how valuable his bat is. So does trading for Marcus Semien to play second base, replacing Jeff McNeil.

But then they signed Jorge Polanco — who’s had one appearance at first base — and plan to give the offense-first Mark Vientos some time at the position as well. He’s played just 12 games there.
