Fans of manga and historical period dramas spent Friday at their local cinemas, generating more than $40 million in combined ticket sales, according to The Numbers.

With $33 million in opening day box office receipts, “Demon Slayer: Kimesu no Yaiba Infinity Castle” easily assumed the No. 1 spot on Friday.

It is the first in a trilogy of films inspired by the beloved Japanese manga animated series, written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotouge.

“Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” raked in $8.85 million during its first full day in theaters — enough to take the No. 2 slot.

Billed as the last chapter in the beloved British franchise, it failed to surpass the $14 million in first-day earnings generated by the original 2019 “Downton Abbey” film.

Pulling in another $8.4 million to claim the third-place spot is “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprising their roles as paranormal investigators.

After eight days in theaters, the film has already earned more than $113 million.

Thirty years after its original release, Disney’s “Toy Story” has returned to movie theaters, and on Friday, sold $1.1 million in ticket sales.

Rounding out the top 5 was “Weapons,” which continued to fire away with $850,000 in sales on its sixth Friday in theaters.
