Matt Miller is facing an investigation by the Missouri Attorney General’s Office after the ESPN NFL scout became the subject of a viral Reddit thread alleging he ran fantasy football charity leagues and withheld payment from multiple participants.

The Missouri AG’s office told Awful Announcing it has “an open investigation into this issue.”

The Reddit thread, which opened on May 21, 2026 and is titled “Matt Miller Leagues and Scam,” gained momentum online after Miller posted on X on June 21 that he was in a serious car accident and underwent a life-saving amputation of his left arm.

“Anyone in a league run by ESPN’s Matt Miller and not get paid as a winner? he has ghosted ours since the championship and provided 0 communication on what funds went to charity/providing payouts to the winners,” the initial Reddit post said. “I’ve seen a few others in the same boat and wanted to see if this is a wider spread problem than a couple leagues.”

Miller has yet to publicly address the claims.

After publishing its reporting, Awful Announcing said it received over 30 messages from additional fantasy league participants or scouting lesson purchasers who shared similar stories.

The outlet added that it spoke with seven individuals about their experience, with some claiming Miller ghosted them after payment.

Some participants were able to get paid after threatening to go to the press about the situation, according to messages viewed by Awful Announcing.

“I tried multiple avenues to get in touch with him, and it was just crickets,” one anonymous participant said. “Only when someone posted people’s contact information at ESPN in the Reddit thread, and I emailed him with some of them CC’d, did a payment come through.

“A lot of people are in that boat where they only got paid after the Reddit thread blew up, and you included ESPN people in your emails to him. Clearly, he could pay, but just thought he could ignore you.”

ESPN declined to comment to Awful Announcing on how it addressed those emails.

Miller allegedly was the commissioner of 91 fantasy leagues in 2025 on fantasy website Sleeper, per a profile believed to be his on the platform.

He also posted about the leagues on social media, as seen in screenshots by Awful Announcing.

Half the leagues’ entry fees would go to charity, while the other half would go to the top finishers.

Miller claimed he lost access to his Sleeper account, as well as various email and social media accounts and therefore did not see messages about payment requests, according to screenshots reviewed by Awful Announcing.

Other screenshots showed that Miller was banned from the Sleeper platform.

In other instances, some people alleged that they paid Miller for scouting lessons and classes, and he was difficult to reach and did not fulfill the agreement he advertised. One instance occurred near the end of Miller’s tenure at Bleacher Report from 2010 to 2021.

Miller, who remains hospitalized after a crash with a semi-truck, has yet to address the situation publicly.

He was ejected from his vehicle and airlifted to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to a GoFundMe page that was set up by his sister-in-law.

Miller suffered a compound fracture of his left femur, a shattered left kneecap, multiple broken ribs, and lost a significant amount of blood, and had multiple surgeries in the accident.

ESPN colleagues Pat McAfee, Mina Kimes, and Adam Schefter all donated to the GoFundMe account for Miller.
