SACRAMENTO, Calif. — If you want to play a game, you can go back and find various two-week stretches over the past three years when Anthony Volpe had the kind of numbers he is putting up right now — or better — through his first 11 games of this season.
Those would often come with questions about whether the Yankees shortstop was finally figuring it out, but almost always they would be followed by violent swings the other way, with cold stretches that would last even longer.
Which begs the question about Volpe’s strong start to this season: Is it real and sustainable, or just another tease?
The answer may determine just how much run he continues to get at shortstop as Volpe fights to regain the job he lost to José Caballero while rehabbing offseason shoulder surgery.
