Garrett Nussmeier’s draft nightmare is over, as the LSU quarterback has finally been taken by the Chiefs in the seventh round on Day 3 of the NFL Draft on Saturday in Pittsburgh.

The 24-year-old, who was projected by many as a first-round pick ahead of last season, saw nine passers selected ahead of him before Kansas City added him with the No. 249 overall pick.

Nussmeier was a star for the Tigers in his first year as a starter, as he tossed 4,052 yards and 29 touchdowns in 2024.

Nevertheless, his play regressed last season as he struggled with injuries, and LSU hobbled its way to a 7-6 finish.

While the likes of Fernando Mendoza and Ty Simpson were always expected to go ahead of him, Nussmeier was passed over for the likes of Drew Allar, Carson Beck and Cade Klubnik, whom the Jets traded up to select in the fourth round.

Cole Payton, Taylen Green, Athan Kaliakmanis and Behren Morton also heard their names called before Nussmeier as well.

As recently as April 8, Nussmeier was projected as the third quarterback off the board in an ESPN mock draft.

Though Nussmeier could be peeved at how far he fell, there are certainly worse landing spots than Kansas City, which acquired the No. 249 pick in a trade with the Steelers.

He will have the chance to learn under Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes as the Chiefs look to bounce back from their 6-11 record in 2025.
