Garrett Wilson missed the first game of his NFL career Sunday after injuring his knee the previous week against the Broncos.

Jets coach Aaron Glenn would not say whether Wilson will be able to practice this week.

“Shoot, I’m hoping he plays, but I understand how these injuries are,” Glenn said. “That’s any player that we have that has injuries. We want all those guys playing, but listen, I’m not a doctor. I listen to the docs, and they give me the best advice that he needs and for me to have so we can go forward.”

The Jets offense missed Wilson tremendously Sunday.

Wilson leads the Jets with 36 receptions, 395 yards and four touchdowns.

The Jets had Josh Reynolds, Allen Lazard, Tyler Johnson and Arian Smith at wide receiver Sunday. Johnson led the team with three catches for 60 yards.

The Jets may be without star cornerback Sauce Gardner on Sunday when they face the Bengals and all-world receiver Ja’Marr Chase. Gardner has a concussion, and it is unusual for players not to miss at least one game after suffering one. … RB/KR Kene Nwangwu also has a concussion. DT Jay Tufele has a “mild” knee sprain, according to Glenn. RB Breece Hall was in and out of Sunday’s game with an undisclosed injury, but Glenn said, “I think he’ll be just fine.” … LB Quincy Williams is eligible to come off injured reserve this week, but Glenn would not say he will.

The Jets defense has played well in the past two weeks, allowing 13 points in each of two losses to the Broncos and Panthers. This came after a slow start by the defense under new defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.

“I do know this: Any time you have a different scheme, man, I wish everything could just work perfectly right off the bat, and it didn’t work that way for the defense for a number of reasons,” Glenn said. “But as these guys continue to play together, as they continue to understand the scheme that Wilks is putting in, I think these guys are getting a lot more confident in what we’re doing and what their job is and understanding what everyone is doing around them also, so I think that’s a huge component of the defense getting better, and I expect those guys to continue to get better.”
