Could special agent Bill Tench return for another investigation?

David Fincher’s Emmy-nominated Netflix show “Mindhunter” was a cult hit when it aired, leaving some viewers wondering if it could return for a Season 3.

“People do ask me that a lot…there’s only one guy that can answer that question. That guy is David Fincher. And David is going to do what David wants to do,” series star Holt McCallany told The Post.

“I would love to work with him again. And I loved that show. I loved making the show,” the “Iron Claw” actor added. “If he wanted to bring it back, I would certainly be happy to come back.”

“Mindhunter” was set in the early criminal psychology days of the FBI in the ‘70s, and aired for two seasons in 2017 and 2019. The plot followed FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (McCallany), who launch a research project to interview serial killers, study their behavior, and use it to aid with ongoing cases.

Although Netflix is opaque about viewership numbers, the show was critically acclaimed, and audiences have long speculated if it’s really over.

In 2020, Netflix put the show on indefinite hold and released the cast from their contracts, but they said it wasn’t an official cancellation. “He may revisit Mindhunter again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn’t fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own,” a spokesperson told Deadline at the time, referring to Fincher.

In 2023, the “Social Network” director told the French outlet Le Journal du Dimanche, “I’m very proud of the first two seasons. But it’s a very expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we didn’t attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment [for season three].”

Fans have created petitions to bring back the show, with one collecting over 80,000 signatures.

McCallany compared “Dawson’s Creek” creator Kevin Williamson, who helms his new show “The Waterfront,” to Fincher.

“Kevin Williamson is a very easygoing guy, a very supportive, very gentle presence on the set. The kind of guy that never raises his voice,” he told The Post.

In contrast, he said about the “Fight Club” director, “David is more meticulous and more of a perfectionist. And I admire that too. He’s one of the greatest filmmakers of all time.”

Although McCallany said that he’d be “happy” to return if Fincher brought back “Mindhunter,” he said he’s focusing on returning for “The Waterfront.” The Netflix series follows the Buckley family, who preside over a fishing empire in a coastal North Carolina town and smuggle drugs on their boats. It’s yet to be renewed for Season 2.

“There were no arguments. There were no people that didn’t get along. We just had fun,” he said. “And I’m optimistic that we’re going to return for a second season. And I’m really looking forward to that.”
