This is the shocking moment a brazen pensioner was spotted cruising the wrong way down a busy motorway – on a motorised wheelchair.

Footage shared yesterday shows the unnamed man trundling along beside a motorway on the outskirts of Dublin, going against the traffic.

Whilst wary motorists looked to be giving the random road hog a wide berth, the pensioner himself seemed completely unfazed by the disruption he was causing.

The video appears to have been filmed by a stationary road user in the left-hand lane.

The man is initially not visible through the heavy stream of cars, but soon appears in a gap in the traffic.

Riding in the opposite direction inside the white line at the concrete central barrier, he can be seen sitting in the chair bundled up with a coat, hat and blanket.

With the traffic crawling, the wheelchair rider appears to be going as fast as the traffic and looks to be making no attempt to stop.

The footage was posted to social media where it has received over 322,000 views.

One said: ‘No one called Gardai for him? That bloke could have caused a major shutdown of the M50 on his way to his heavenly abode.’

Another commented: ‘The vehicle should be seized and the guy disqualified from owning one.

‘See these guys on mobility scooters driving on sidewalks, roads and anywhere they please with impunity.’

A third wrote: ‘Heard of people dumping their pets at the side of the road but it’s a sign that times are getting hard when they ditch their parents.’

Another said: ‘Probably sick of his carer talking behind his back and pushing him around all the time.’

It comes after a disabled pensioner earlier this year caused a crash while drunk on his mobility scooter.

Father of one Stewart O’Neil, 65, who lives in a care home and had never held a driving licence, had been given the 8mph electric vehicle so he could regularly visit his son who lives a mile away.

But after paying a visit to his local nail bar for a pedicure, O’Neil was so delighted at the results he began knocking back Vodka to toast his new found freedom to roam.

On his way back home he was seen travelling at speed on the pavement on his Sunrise medical mobility scooter before zig-zagging, clipping a tree and nearly toppling over.

He then swerved onto the road out of control and ploughed into the back of a car as the driver looked on in horror through her rear view mirror.

Police called to the scene in Southport town centre in Merseyside discovered he was more than twice the alcohol limit. No one was injured in the smash.

According to a recent report, mobility scooters are involved in crashes almost every day, with more than 100 victims hurt and nine people killed a year, according to analysis.

The alarming figures show scooter drivers were involved in 334 accidents in 2022 – the most recent year for which data is available – up 77 per cent in two years.

As well as nine deaths, there were 109 accidents where victims were seriously injured, some of whom were hit by out-of-control drivers.
