Herm Edwards remembers walking onto the field before his first preseason game as the Jets head coach in 2001 … and not knowing where to go.

Edwards had spent years preparing to be a head coach and grilling his mentor Tony Dungy about why he made certain decisions and how he handled different scenarios. But he never covered this. As an assistant coach, there are drills to run. But what exactly does a head coach do in pregame warmups?

“You walk out on the field and now you’re the head coach and all of sudden you don’t know where to stand,” Edwards said recently. “I walked out there and said, ‘I didn’t ask Tony, where do you stand? What do you do in pregame?’ You have nothing to do. You’ve got to walk around. You have to act like you know what you’re doing.”

Part of being a first-time head coach is acting like you know what you’re doing even when you don’t. The Jets have another first-time head coach in Aaron Glenn, the seventh coach out of their past eight to be a rookie coach when taking over the Jets.
