An urgent recall has been issued for a popular organic milk brand beloved by Gwyneth Paltrow for its potential to cause serious harm or even death.

Horizon Organic, which is headquartered in Colorado, has recalled 19,688 cartons of its whole milk for its potential to spoil before the best before date.

The compromised cartons of milk – 8oz in size – were distributed in Arizona, California, and Nevada.

Drinking spoiled milk can cause abdominal cramping, vomiting, and diarrhea, and it also has the potential to cause food poisoning.

In severe cases, experts warn this could lead to death, especially for people with weakened immune systems, such as children, and older adults.

The Missouri Poison Center advises people who have drank spoiled milk to ‘wipe or rinse out the mouth’ and to have a ‘serving size of water to drink’.

It highlights that in most cases, symptoms caused by drinking spoiled milk resolve within 12 to 24 hours but if they worsen, a medical provider should be contacted immediately.

The FDA has categorized the recall as a Class II, describing it as ‘a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.’

In terms of what to look for, the cartons have the following universal product codes (UPC); 3663207113 and 366320712.

They also have the expiration dates of March 3, 4, 6, and 7, 2025.

The 8oz cartons are designed for drinking on-the-go with a peel off foil opening.

In terms of nutritional values, each serving contains 150 calories and 8g og protein.

To date, there have been no reports of any customers getting sick.

Horizon Organic milk is available online via retailers including FreshDirect and Instacart and it is available in a spread of convenience stores, with CVS being one of the main carriers.

The company, which prides itself on being the first organic milk brand sold across the US, launched in 1991 and it quickly grew into a multi-million dollar enterprise with a cult following.

In 2023, when Gwyneth Paltrow opened up her Montecito guest house on AirBnB,  she revealed the contents of her refrigerator.

Footage shared on social media show the star’s refrigerator stocked with a mix of Horizon Organic products, including whole milk and half and half.

Last January, Danone, the former owner of Horizon Organic, sold the brand to private equity firm Platinum Equity for an undisclosed amount.
