They paid proper homage to one unforgettable season, even if only a few of the players who helped make it so memorable were on hand Monday night when the banner honoring the 2025 Big East champions was revealed at Carnesecca Arena.

Then, they whet a few appetites and lit up a few imaginations about what might lie ahead. For St. John’s, this was a stylish grand premiere in just about every conceivable way. They scored 54 points in each half. They laid a 108-74 hurting on a Quinnipiac team that’s going to win a lot of basketball games itself this year.

That’s partially because the Bobcats won’t have to face many teams like the Johnnies in the MAAC. Look, this was how this was supposed to go this Opening Night. The home team harbors legit Final Four ambitions for the first time in 40 years. The guests harbor legit ambitions to earn their first trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Those are entirely different stratospheres. Quinnipiac’s Bobcats will do fine in theirs.
