This is the horrifying moment a mother and her five-year-old son were swallowed up by a large crater in the road when it suddenly collapsed.

The 43-year-old woman was dropping her child off at a kindergarten in Bucharest, Romania, when the cobblestones gave way underneath them yesterday morning.

The young boy, who had just got out of the car, immediately fell into the huge pit with his mother jumping in to save him.

The driver of a bin lorry, that was parked alongside the car, rescued the five-year-old boy with the woman helped out of the crater by members of the public.

The terrifying moment on Orhideelor Road in Sector 6 of Bucharest was captured on nearby CCTV.

The mother can be seen on the footage panicking as her son was swallowed up by the cobblestone road.

Fortunately no one was seriously injured in the incident, although the car was badly damaged, local news has reported.

Police and fire crews rushed to the scene and the woman received medical attention but did not require hospital treatment.

An investigation has now been launched to determine why the road suddenly gave way.

However, initial reports suggests it was was caused by erosion due to a utility pipe and the combined weight of the car and bin lorry.
