That’s adding insult to injury.
Notre Dame coach Micah Shrewsberry suffered an Achilles rupture mid-game Tuesday during a 100-56 home blowout loss to No. 1 Duke and ended the game wearing a boot.
The injury apparently occurred with about 4:50 left in the first half, when Shrewsberry fell onto the bench and needed help walking off the court during halftime.
Shrewsberry came out in the second half with a boot on his left leg, and it was confirmed after the game that he indeed suffered an Achilles injury.
“The season of hell continues,” Shrewsberry told reporters.
“I’m 49 years old. Tonight’s not the worst thing that’s ever happened to me. But these guys have a long life to live. And yeah, we wanted to play well, but we didn’t. There’s a reason they’re the No. 1 team in the country, and one of the best defenses and offenses in the country. We didn’t play as well as we wanted to, but this isn’t gonna be the worst thing that ever happens in their lives. So embrace the next opportunity, embrace tomorrow, and if we just keep getting chances and opportunities, we’re gonna keep fighting our way to see what happens.”
The Fighting Irish have fallen well below preseason expectations, as Shrewsberry’s crew was pegged at No. 8 in USA Today’s ACC rankings to begin the season.
With a 3-12 conference record, they now sit at No. 16, ahead of only Boston College and Georgia Tech.
This follows a disappointing 15-18 season in which Notre Dame lost to Pittsburgh in the first round of the ACC Tournament.
Shrewsberry succeeded longtime coach Mike Brey after the 2023 season and is in his third year with Notre Dame.
Despite an underwhelming tenure to date, with a 40-54 mark after making the NCAA Tournament in 2023 with Penn State, multiple reports previously stated there was no appetite to fire him.
