The Knicks will be without Miles McBride for a significant time period.
He was dealing with much more than just ankle soreness, it turns out.
McBride has a sports hernia, according to league sources. He had missed the last five games with what the team repeatedly said was left ankle injury management and that he was just dealing with some soreness.
On Wednesday, they said he was still getting evaluated, after The Post reported that he was undergoing tests for a potentially more serious injury.
Clearly, it went way beyond ankle soreness.
While having his ankle evaluated, he went through other tests for other ailments that had bothered him but not forced him to miss time this year, per league sources, which uncovered the core muscle injury.
He will undergo surgery on Friday.
It is a big blow, as McBride had been enjoying a career year, averaging 12.9 points per game on 43.4 percent shooting from the field and stellar 42.0 percent shooting from 3-point range. He has also emerged as one of the Knicks’ best point-of-attack defenders.
But the Knicks do have some new depth at guard — they acquired Jose Alvarado from the Pelicans in exchange for Dalen Terry and two second round picks just ahead of Thursday’s 3 p.m. trade deadline.
They had just traded Guerschon Yabusele for Terry late Wednesday night, and rerouted him for Alvarado, a strong defender and capable ball-handler.
In the second year of a three-year, $13 million contract, McBride’s deal has been one of the best bargains in the league.
