The Mets chose Mark Vientos over Brett Baty.
Baty and starter Christian Scott are being demoted to Triple-A Syracuse, noti.group’s Jon Heyman reported Friday.
Veteran Jose Iglesias is being called up to replace Baty on the active roster.
With a lack of regular playing time available for both players, the Mets had to make the call between which of the young players would receive everyday reps in the majors.
Vientos, hitting .295, ultimately prevailed over Baty, who has struggled this year after a hot start. Baty is hitting just .225 with a .686 OPS.
“This is a tough one. There’s no easy solution here,” Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said recently about the looming roster decision. “I do think we have two players who deserve to be in the big leagues, and that’s why they’re both here right now.
“I’ve also been consistent that this present roster construction cannot last in perpetuity. At some point we’re going to have to get slightly more conventional. But we have two guys who I think have demonstrated they really deserve to be in the big leagues.”

Scott, a rookie, is being demoted after a strong five-game stretch in which he posted a 3.27 ERA, including Thursday’s five-inning, two-run effort against the Diamondbacks.
With three off days in the first 10 days of June thanks to the upcoming London series against the Phillies, the Mets have flexibility to skip a starter.
