It’s not yet March, but that madness started early Wednesday night.

A miracle final second resulted in one of the most outlandish covers of the season in any sport in West Carolina’s 80-73 win over UNC Asheville.

West Carolina entered as a 1.5-point favorite, with the total closing at 152.5 at bet365.

The Bulldogs led at different points throughout a back-and-forth second half before mayhem broke out in the game’s final second.

The two Tar Heel State rivals were tied, 73-73, with under three seconds to go when WCU’s Cord Stansberry drained a 3-pointer to give the Catamounts a 76-73 lead with 0.9 seconds remaining.

The total for UNC Asheville-Western Carolina was 152.5.

But then, all hell broke loose on the UNC Asheville sidelines. Head coach Mike Morrell completely lost his cool on the officials, earning himself a double-technical foul with less than a second left.

That sent Stansberry to the line for four free throws, throwing the Over/Under back into the balance.

And wouldn’t you know that Stansberry, a redshirt junior from California, is lights out from the stripe, convering 91.3 percent of his foul shots in 2024-25.

Four swishes later, and the game was over: Western Carolina 80, UNC Asheville 73.

A total of 153 points, completely flipping the total, and causing plenty of under bettors to ponder why they even bother.

That’s life in this game.

Seasoned punters eventually get used to the feeling that comes with a bizarre loss. Keeping your cool and not overreacting to good or bad breaks is a foundational lesson in gambling, but even that bizarre loss is a tough one to swallow.

You could forgive any bettor who was on either side of the 152.5-point Over/Under if they turned off the television as soon as that shot was converted.

Betting on College Basketball?

The game wasn’t going to go to overtime, and that’s all that mattered to anybody with a ticket on the total, which currently sat at 149 points.

That still doesn’t mean that bad beats don’t sting.

And even the most jaded punter would have a hard time keeping a straight face if they were on the Under.

Why Trust New York Post Betting

Michael Leboff is a long-suffering Islanders fan, but a long-profiting sports bettor with 10 years of experience in the gambling industry. He loves using game theory to help punters win bracket pools, find long shots, and learn how to beat the market in mainstream and niche sports.
