Joel McHale fessed up to exhibiting bad behavior on “Community.”
The 53-year-old actor recalled how he mistreated reporters who came to the set of the NBC sitcom series on Tuesday’s episode of Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s “Dinner’s On Me” podcast.
“The only time — well, I’ve been an a–hole many times — but I would always call out reporters,” McHale said.
“And they’d be like, ‘Such a great show. It’s just so amazing,’” he continued. “And it would be one thing if we were on a red carpet and they were like, here’s this guy from this thing. But it was like, if you come to set, if you’re sitting on our set, you should have like done some research. You should know what show this is.”
McHale said he would taunt the reporters by quizzing them about the show.
“I’ve had reporters come back and just be like, ‘You really got me,’” McHale added. “And I was like, ‘Yeah, I probably should just enjoy the promotion and not call people out.’”
McHale played Jeff Winger on “Community,” which ran on NBC for six seasons, from 2009 to 2014. The show followed a mismatched group of people at a community college.
Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Chevy Chase, Jim Rash and Ken Jeong also starred in the sitcom.
On Ferguson’s podcast, McHale gave an update on the “Community” movie, which was announced to be in development by Peacock in 2022.
Well, we got the money, which is one of the harder things to do,” McHale said. “And everyone’s in, so that’s the other. It’s really coming down to schedules, and a script was written. So all that is real.”
“And I know that we’ve been talking about it for literally years, but it will happen,” McHale promised, “and there’s just, you know, it’s just getting those schedules together.”
After confirming he’s read the script for the film, McHale jokingly gave a major spoiler.
“Yeah. I’m not going to tell you anything about it. I’ll just say, everybody dies,” he said.
Last year, McHale told The Post that he doesn’t think Chase, 81, will be in the “Community” movie. Chase was fired from the show in 2013 after allegedly using a racist slur toward Glover during filming. He also got into a heated confrontation with the show’s creator, Dan Harmon.
“I don’t think he’s allowed to. I don’t think it would happen. I’m guessing if you asked him, he wouldn’t be interested,” McHale said about Chase being in the film.
“Obviously his unceremonious departure in Season 4 pretty much did that in,” he added.
