CHICAGO — Jazz Chisholm Jr. is officially on the injured list while the Yankees have designated Enyel De Los Santos for assignment just over two weeks after trading for him.
Those were the headliners in a flurry of roster moves the Yankees made Wednesday, which also included calling up Will Warren (for a spot start against the White Sox) and Oswald Peraza to replace Chisholm.
The Yankees were still gathering opinions from doctors on Chisholm’s UCL injury to determine the severity of it and whether surgery is necessary, but they described his injury as a “left elbow sprain.”
Cutting ties with De Los Santos was somewhat of a surprise, if only because the Yankees just recently acquired him (from the Padres with a minor league reliever for Triple-A outfielder Brandon Lockridge).
But the right-hander struggled in five appearances with the Yankees, getting tagged for 10 runs in 6 ⅓ innings, including seven runs in 1 ⅔ innings against the White Sox on Monday night.
The Yankees had to send out a pitcher on Wednesday in order to make room for Warren’s spot start (and satisfy the maximum of 13 pitchers on the 26-man roster).
It’s possible that Warren could head right back to Triple-A after the start and a reliever like Scott Effross joins the Yankees on Friday in Detroit.
Peraza, meanwhile, could factor into the third-base mix with Oswaldo Cabrera and DJ LeMahieu while Chisholm is out.
He is a talented defensive infielder who has seen some time at third base, though he has struggled to hit in the big leagues.
Still only 24, Peraza suffered a right shoulder strain this spring that delayed his season.
But he has spent the last month-plus heating up at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre – over his last 35 games, he was batting .303 with a .914 OPS and seven home runs.
During a 52-game stint with the Yankees in 2023, Peraza got most of his action at third base and played well there.
But he struggled at the plate, batting .191 with a .539 OPS in 191 plate appearances.
