A new documentary about the life and legacy of Roberto Clemente premieres tonight.

“Clemente” comes to the History Channel from executive producers LeBron James and Richard Linklater, and director David Altrogge.

The doc follows Clemente’s life and career on and off the baseball diamond, from growing up in Puerto Rico and early career struggles with the Pittsburgh Pirates to becoming one of baseball’s most beloved players. It will also explore Clemente’s legacy in the aftermath of his tragic 1972 death; Clemente died in a plane crash while en route to deliver aid packages to Nicaragua following an earthquake.

‘Clemente’: what to know

  • When: Sept. 23, 8 p.m. ET
  • Channel: History Channel
  • Streaming: Philo (try it free), DIRECTV (try it free)

In addition to photos and footage of Clemente himself, all three of his sons — Roberto Clemente Jr., Luis Clemente, and Roberto Enrique Clemente — will be featured in the documentary. Puerto Rican actress Rita Moreno, sportscaster Bob Costas, musician Tom Morello, actor and lifelong Pirates fan Michael Keaton, and current New York Mets all-star Francisco Lindor will also appear in interviews.

“Roberto Clemente was one of the greatest baseball players of all time, and we are excited to bring his story to The History Channel with the premiere of this inspiring documentary,” said Eli Lehrer, Executive Vice President and Head of Programming for The History Channel, in a release about the documentary. “With Hispanic Heritage Month coming up, we hope generations old and new will find motivation in Clemente’s legacy. Whether you’re picking up a baseball glove or lending a service hand in your neighborhood, we all can learn something from this selfless individual.”

When does the ‘Clemente’ documentary come out?

“Clemente” premieres on The History Channel tonight, Sept. 23, at 8 p.m. ET.

How to watch ‘Clemente’ on the History Channel

If you don’t have cable, the only way to watch “Pitino: Red Storm Rising” is with a live TV streaming service. At $28/month after a seven-day free trial, Philo is the most affordable of the live TV streaming services and it includes The History Channel in its base plan.

We also like DIRECTV, which includes The History Channel in its MyEntertainment genre pack; after a five-day free trial, you’ll get your first two months for $29.99/month.
