After finishing 15th in the slalom portion of the alpine skiing women’s team combined event, Mikaela Shiffrin is back on the slopes today for the first of two individual events in Cortina.

Today, Shiffrin will compete in the giant slalom, an event she won a gold medal in during the 2018 Winter Olympics. In the 2022 Winter Olympics, Shiffrin did not finish the first run of the giant slalom, making her ineligible to defend her title.

Three more American skiiers, Paula Moltzan (already a bronze medalist in Cortina), A.J. Hurt and Nina O’Brien will also compete in giant slalom this morning.

How to watch the women’s giant slalom for free

If you don’t have cable, you’ll need a live TV streaming service to stream the women’s giant slalom in the Winter Olympics for free.

DIRECTV is our favorite service for watching TV live for free — it has a five-day free trial and there are a ton of options for plans that include NBC and USA Network (plus every other channel you’ll need for the Olympics), starting at $49.99/month.

You can also catch every minute of the Olympics with a subscription to Peacock, which starts at $10.99/month, and if you find yourself sleeping in this Sunday, you can watch a full replay of the women’s downhill on Peacock, too.

What is giant slalom?

Giant Slalom is a high-speed alpine skiing event that strikes a balance between technical agility and speed. Skiers navigate a course of “gates” using wide, powerful carving turns at high speeds. Unlike a straight-line race, it requires immense precision and edge control to maintain momentum through every arc.
