For the third time this year, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz will meet in the final of a Grand Slam tournament; this time, there’s more on the line than just a title.

Sinner, the defending US Open champ, and Alcaraz currently sit at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in ATP Tour rankings, but whoever wins this match will, in addition to winning the US Open title, become (or stay, in Sinner’s case) the world No. 1.

The US Open final will mark the 15th time Sinner and Alcaraz go head-to-head, and the fifth in as many months. Previously this year, they’ve met in the finals at the Italian Open, French Open, Wimbledon Championships, and most recently, the Cincinnati Open; Alcaraz emerged victorious in all but the Wimbledon final.

It also marks the first time in tennis’ Open Era (1968–now) that the same players will play in three different Grand Slam finals in the same season.

Sinner made some history of his own, too; at 24 years old, he becomes the youngest player in the Open Era to reach the final of all four Grand Slams in one season. In the first Slam of the year, Sinner successfully defended his Australian Open title against Alexander Zverev.
