Week 1 of the 2025 college football season is also marking the end of an era.

ESPN “College GameDay” analyst Lee Corso, who has been with the program since its 1987 inception, will make the final mascot headgear pick of his career on this morning’s broadcast.

“College GameDay,” ESPN’s three-hour college football preview show, is set to go live from the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, ahead of the Ohio State-Texas game this afternoon.

In April, Corso, 90, announced that he would retire following the first “College GameDay” of the new season. “My family and I will be forever indebted for the opportunity to be part of ESPN and ‘College GameDay’ for nearly 40 years,” Corso said in a statement released by ESPN.

‘college gameday’ week 1: what to know

  • When: Aug. 30, 9 a.m. ET
  • Where: Ohio State University (Columbus, Ohio)
  • Channel: ESPN
  • Streaming: DIRECTV (try it free), ESPN

The location of today’s broadcast marks a full circle moment in Corso’s “College GameDay” tenure; he made his first headgear pick before a 1996 game at Ohio State, correctly donning a Brutus Buckeye mascot head. Since then, Corso is 286-144 over 340 selections.

In a tribute posted online earlier this week, former colleagues, guest pickers, his family and even fans came together to wish Corso well in retirement. The emotional video ended with his current “College GameDay” hosts Rece Davis, Desmond Howard and Kirk Herbstreit, who has worked alongside Corso since 1996.

In addition to Davis, Howard, and Herbstreit, “College GameDay” will continue to feature Pat McAfee, Nick Saban, Jen Lada, Jess Sims, Pete Thamel, Steve “Stanford Steve” Coughlin, and Katie Feeney

Here’s how to tune in to Corso’s final “College GameDay” pick.

‘College GameDay’ Week 1 date and time

“College GameDay” kicks off at 9 a.m. ET today, Aug. 30, on ESPN.

How to watch ‘College GameDay’ for free

If you don’t have cable, you’ll need a live TV streaming service to stream today’s “College GameDay” for free. One option we love is DIRECTV, which comes with five days free and starts at $49.99/month, with plenty of subscription options and genre packs that include ESPN.

You can also watch “College GameDay” on ESPN’s new DTC streaming service. The $29.99/month Unlimited package includes 24/7 live ESPN and much more.
