The torpedo bat phenomenon has infiltrated the sportsbooks.
After a number of hitters adopted the new bowling-pin-looking bats during MLB opening week, FanDuel and DraftKings Sportsbooks are offering special bets related to the movement.
DraftKings has an entire section made up of players that have used a torpedo bat this season, including Elly de la Cruz, Francisco Lindor, Dansby Swanson, and others.
FanDuel has done a similar thing, creating a “Torpedo Fest” tab for game props and full-season futures bets for players using the new bats.
The new torpedo bats have become the talk of baseball since YES Network’s Michael Kay pointed them out during the Yankees’ 20-run, nine-homer barrage on Saturday against the Brewers.
Seemingly every day since the weekend, more and more players have adopted the bat, including de la Cruz, who went to the plate on Monday with a torpedo-style stick and hit two home runs.
Former MIT physicist Aaron Leanhardt, who served as an analyst for the Yankees last season, designed the Bronx Bombers’ bats, which are used by five different pinstriped players.
Some have proclaimed that the bats are illegal, but all indications from the league are that the new design is well within current rules.
MLB requires that bats are smooth, round, and don’t have diameters or lengths of more than 2.61 inches and 42 inches, respectively.

On Sunday, Yankees outfielder and torpedo bat user Cody Bellinger said MLB gave the team the go-ahead before using the new wood.
“It’s all within regulation,” Bellinger said. “They made sure of that before the season even started, knowing that with the way these bats looked, it was probably going to get out at some point.”
