Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns wants defensive improvement for his club next season, but there is only so much he can do within the team’s roster constraints.
The Pete Alonso decision aside (the first baseman, who declined defensively this season, will be a free agent after he opts out from his contract following the World Series), the Mets will have other options to weigh as they strive toward defensive improvement.
A look at the possibilities to be traded to accommodate such a goal:
Jeff McNeil
He will be entering the final season of a contract that pays him $17.5 million next year. McNeil had a decent season offensively (.746 OPS), and has versatility as somebody who can play every outfield position, in addition to second base, adding to his value.
