There might be more to the unfortunate DK Metcalf viral moment than the footage CBS cameras captured.
Metcalf, who grabbed and swiped at a Lions fan who was leaning over the railing on Sunday, has history with that fan, the NFL Network reported Monday. According to the report, Metcalf reported the same fan to Seahawks security last season. (The Seahawks played at Ford Field in Week 4 last year.) Why Metcalf flagged the fan then and the aftermath of that alleged incident were not immediately known.
What is known is that Metcalf, now with the Steelers, approached the fan in the second quarter, grabbed his shirt to pull him down, exchanged words and then at least attempted to strike him, making contact with the fan’s blue wig.
The words exchanged are in dispute. The fan — who told the Detroit Free Press that his name was Ryan Kennedy — said he called the wideout by his government name of DeKaylin Zecharius Metcalf.
“He doesn’t like his government name,” Kennedy, who reportedly wasn’t ejected from the game, told the Free Press. “I called him that and then he grabbed me and ripped my shirt.”
Metcalf did not address reporters after the Steelers’ victory and had not yet given his side of the conflict. NFL Network cited a source close to Metcalf, who alleged the fan called Metcalf’s mom a “derogatory word and called Metcalf ‘something we both know you don’t call a black man.’”
That is what former star receiver Chad Johnson was told, too.
“Obviously, I am not condoning putting your hands on a fan or punching the fan but he did call him a racial slur, called him the n-word and he did call his mom a c—t,” Johnson said on his “Nightcap” podcast.
The NFL is reviewing the incident before handing out any discipline.
