Breece Hall jokes about Jets’ spending after franchise tag

The Jets have started free agency with a bang, surely making a number of fans happy. But one player is clearly frustrated: Breece Hall.

The Jets put the franchise tag on Hall last week instead of signing him to a long-term contract. Hall, following the Jets’ early spending spree Monday, took to X to express his thoughts.

“Damn we sure got a lot of money in Florham Park all these contracts dudes signing,” Hall wrote.

Hall posted a follow-up tweet, writing, “I definitely be pocket watching in free agency lmao.”

With the NFL’s legal tampering period opening Monday, the Jets have already reeled in Saints linebacker Demario Davis and edge rushers Joseph Ossai and Kingsley Enagbare to bolster their defense. They also traded for Dolphins safety Minkah Fitzpatrick for a seventh-round pick.

Davis’ deal is for two years, $22 million, while Ossai got three years, $36 million. The Jets will sign Fitzpatrick to a three-year, $40 million deal following the trade.

“I’m happy we spending shii we need to!” Hall replied to another X user.

But Hall, barring an extension by July 15, will play on a one-year, $14.3 million deal in 2026 under the franchise tag. The tag ensures Hall will be with New York next year unless a team gives up two first-round picks for him.

Despite the two sides’ inability to get a deal done before free agency, Jets general manager Doug Mougey said Hall “is a good player and we want to find a way to keep him around.”

Across four years since being drafted in the second round by the Jets, Hall has shown his potential. Last year, he broke 1,000 rushing yards for the first time but scored just five touchdowns. In both of the two prior years, he hit at least 800 yards and eight total touchdowns following a rookie-year ACL tear.

His production has been limited due to the Jets’ situation as well. In his time in the league, New York has cycled through the likes of Zach Wilson, Aaron Rodgers and Justin Fields at quarterback, with only Rodgers seeing some success. He’s also had three different offensive coordinators.

Hall’s market is sure to be aided by stars like Jahmyr Gibbs and Bijan Robinson potentially getting massive extensions next year. In addition, Kenneth Walker and Travis Etienne agreed to three-plus-year deals on Monday with the Chiefs and Saints, respectively, accruing over $40 million each.

Unlike them, though, Hall will need to wait another year before being paid handsomely.
