Joe Burrow suffered a toe injury in the first half of Sunday’s Bengals game against the Jaguars and will not return.
Cincinnati’s star quarterback remained on the ground after a play in the second quarter, when he tried to evade a sack but was taken to the ground by a Jaguars defender, and grabbed at his left foot.
Trainers tended to Burrow, who did get up under his own power and limped off to the locker room.
He was initially ruled questionable to return before being ruled out during the second half.
Jake Browning took over at quarterback as the Bengals trailed the Jaguars, 17-10, at halftime.
A serious injury to Burrow would be an absolute crusher for a Bengals team looking to leave a playoff-less 2024 campaign in the rearview.
Burrow, the team’s first overall pick in 2020, threw for 43 touchdowns and nine interceptions last year and was named an MVP candidate, an award that eventually went to Bills quarterback Josh Allen.
The former LSU product has battled injuries throughout his young career. He tore his ACL midway through his rookie season and also sustained a wrist injury that sidelined him for the latter half of the 2023 season.
The Bengals defeated the Browns to open the season.
