TORONTO — Shohei Ohtani’s performance in the Dodgers’ NLCS Game 4 clincher against the Brewers — three homers while hitting and 10 strikeouts in six shutout innings while pitching — was Ruthian or, more and more, Ohtani-an.
He is Ohne of kind. No one like him. Ever.
Ruth went 3-0 in three postseason starts as a pitcher — and even had a two-run triple to support himself in Game 4 of the 1918 World Series. And he also is the lone player to twice homer three times in a postseason game.
But in researching Ruth, I did realize he set a postseason record more unlikely to be repeated than perhaps having another human unicorn-y enough to pop three homers and whiff 10 in the same game since Rick Wise, a full-time pitcher, once hit two homers and struck 12 while throwing a no-hitter in a regular-season game.
