Call it circumstance. Call it desperation. Call it unfinished business.

Whatever label fits, Deebo Samuel is coming home.

According to sources with knowledge of the situation, Samuel has agreed to a one-year, $7 million contract with the San Francisco 49ers, reuniting with the franchise he helped carry to two Super Bowls and restoring a familiar face to an offense suddenly scrambling for healthy playmakers.

Recent injuries to wide receivers Rick Pearsall and Christian Kirk forced San Francisco to pivot, and the solution was staring them in the face in plain sight. Rather than searching for an unfamiliar name, or promoting a rookie from within the organization, the 49ers turned back the clock and brought back one of the most dynamic offensive weapons in franchise history.

Samuel spent six seasons in San Francisco from 2019 through 2024, catching 334 passes for 4,792 yards and 22 touchdowns while becoming one of the NFL’s most unique offensive chess pieces.

Given the 49ers’ mounting injury concerns, Samuel is expected to step into a significant role immediately.

He rejoins a receiver room headlined by veteran Mike Evans, former Ram Demarcus Robinson, and rookie De’Zhaun Stribling. The original plan was for Christian Kirk to stabilize the position group after arriving this offseason, but a lingering calf injury has sidelined him. Pearsall, meanwhile, is dealing with a flare-up of the PCL injury in his knee that first surfaced last season, leaving San Francisco dangerously thin just as training camp intensifies.

Samuel’s familiarity with the organization and the pressure that comes with chasing a Lombardi Trophy in the Bay Area makes him a great fit for the 49ers. Instead of spending August learning Kyle Shanahan’s playbook, Samuel can make an impact immediately.

Samuel spent last season with the Washington Commanders and proved he still has plenty left in the tank. Despite injuries to quarterback Jayden Daniels and star receiver Terry McLaurin, Samuel led the Commanders with 72 receptions for 727 yards and five touchdowns, becoming the offense’s most dependable target week after week.

Now his career has come full circle.

The explosive, positionless weapon who once terrorized defenses as both a runner and receiver may no longer be at the peak of his powers, but San Francisco isn’t asking him to turn back the calendar. The 49ers simply need a proven playmaker who already understands the stakes at hand.

Sometimes the best offseason move isn’t a blockbuster trade, but welcoming back a player who never really stopped feeling like he belonged.
