A rather unremarkable play erupted in the eighth inning of the Yankees’ game against the Pirates as both benches cleared during an altercation between Dennis Santana and Jose Caballero.
Caballero hit a tame grounder to the pitcher to end the inning with a double play, but the pair jawed after the play concluded as things quickly escalated.
The pair could be seen walking toward each other before Pittsburgh’s Rafael Flores Jr. held an incensed Santana back.
But the benches and bullpens cleared out nonetheless as the pair continued talking towards each other, with Santana trying to break out of his teammates’ grasp and make a bolt towards Caballero moments later.
The game was paused for several moments before play resumed, and the home fans were energized by the fracas as “Let’s Go Yankees!” chants rang out through the stadium.
