ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — After a strike ’em out, throw ’em out double play, the Yankees’ dugout was dealt a throw ’em out, throw ’em out from home plate umpire Doug Eddings.

Bench coach Brad Ausmus got the hook first, after the Yankees tried to challenge whether José Caballero was safe at second base in the top of the sixth but were evidently too late, and then Aaron Boone went out to argue with Eddings and earned an ejection himself.

Boone followed by giving Eddings an earful, blowing off some steam during a frustrating stretch in which the Yankees entered Wednesday having lost 10 of their last 12 games and were in the midst of another futile offensive showing.

It marked Boone’s third ejection of the season and Ausmus’ first. Tanner Swanson, the club’s director of catching and major league field coordinator, appeared to step into the acting manager’s spot for the rest of the game.

In a game the Yankees trailed the Rays 2-0, Caballero took off on a 2-2 pitch to Goldschmidt, which resulted in a strikeout as the veteran fell deeper into an 0-for-33 skid. Caballero was then thrown out at second by Rays catcher Nick Fortes on the play.

Boone held up his hand from the dugout as Ausmus got on the phone awaiting word on whether the Yankees should challenge, but by the time Ausmus signaled to Boone and Boone signaled to Eddings that they wanted a review, they appeared to have run out of time.
