A lot of folks understandably are guessing the Mets as Tigers superstar pitcher Tarik Skubal’s ultimate free agent destination this winter, and there are two very good reasons for that.

1) The Mets are easily baseball’s richest team (at least by owner net worth).

2) Nobody should be as desperate as they are following back-to-back big-market disasters*. (*This disaster isn’t quite complete, but we have a pretty good idea where they’re headed.)

The more immediate question, though, is where Skubal, who shut down the listless Yankees on one hit over six dominant innings Tuesday night at the Stadium, will be headed in a trade. That could be any contender, but one person familiar with the suddenly reeling Yankees’ thinking suggested it probably won’t be them even though they look like they need help today. (More on that later.)
