The Los Angeles Sparks were handed a 125-97 beatdown Thursday thanks to Marina Mabrey, who scored 53 points against the purple and gold.
Mabrey tied the record for most points in a single WNBA game alongside A’Ja Wilson (2023) and Liz Cambage (2018). The Toronto Tempo guard’s nine made threes also tied the WNBA record.
She’s also the only players this season to score 18-plus points in a single quarter with Mabrey achieving the feat three separate times all in the month of June. No player in WNBA history had ever recorded three 18-plus point quarters in the same season.
Mabrey received a standing ovation in Toronto for her electric performance against the Sparks, who had no answer for the Toronto guard.
The 29-year-old’s final stat line of the night featured 53 points, six rebounds and two assists across 32 minutes played. Mabrey was 17-of-28 from the field, 9-for-18 from beyond the arc, and 10-for-12 from the free throw line.
“To do it in the WNBA, it’s kind of like a dream come true,” Mabrey said on the broadcast following the matchup. “To have teammates that support me, just looking for me everywhere, want me to do my best, shoutout to them.
“We came out ready to play. Our defense led to our offense. When we can get out into transition, I can get some space to do what I want to do.”
Tempo also set a new scoring record for points in a game (non-overtime) by defeating the Sparks 125-97, per the WNBA.
