One of the favorite to win the 2026 World Cup plays their first match today as another day of World Cup action opens with Spain vs. Cape Verde.

Spain is coming into this year’s World Cup riding high on a victory in the 2024 UEFA European Championship and an appearance in the 2025 Nations League final, in addition to a mostly undefeated qualifying run leading to today.

Their stacked roster includes 18-year-old phenom Lamine Yamal, who enjoyed a breakout moment during the 2024 Euros. Yamal is currently dealing with a hamstring injury, but Spain coach Luis de la Fuente says the star is in “perfect condition.” Despite that, he’ll likely play limited minutes off the bench in this afternoon’s tilt.
