They really had a ball on their wedding day.
A pair of diehard Yankees fans were not going to let their nuptials stand in the way of attending the Bronx Bombers’ Opening Day.
After Sean Doddy and Monique Zabihzadeh of Williamsburg said their ‘I do’s” on April 3, they hopped on the 4 train to Yankee Stadium in time to watch the team sink the Miami Marlins.
“We have our big wedding in June and we wanted to do a little elopement ourselves before then. And we chose April 3rd because that was a year to the day of when Sean proposed,” Zabihzadeh, 31, told The Post.
“We really hadn’t figured out what we were going to do after the ceremony, so we were like, ‘Why don’t we just go and spend the day there?’”
Their City Hall appointment was at 10:30 am, so they just got on the train afterwards — still in their wedding attire — with their photographer to make the game’s 1:30 pm start time.
Some riders congratulated them and snapped their photo.
But “probably half the car, if not more, just looked at us and then looked the other way,” Zabihzadeh said.
“Even though they saw our photographer and we were trying to find a place to sit down, it was kind of funny how little some of the people cared … because everyone was just trying to get to the game.”
The newlyweds were not prepared for the fanfare they received once they arrived at the House That Ruth Built.
“One woman started screaming when she saw us and was like, ‘Oh my God, did you just get married?’ Then, in three seconds, there was a huge crowd of people around us cheering us on,” Zabihzadeh recalled.
Once they got into the stadium, they were inundated with even more well wishes.
“It was very flattering and appreciated, the number of people that said ‘Congratulations,’” Doddy, 34, a Bronx native, said.
Since the bride was still in her heels, she found their seats, while her doting groom offered to get them food.
“I literally ate a hotdog in my wedding dress. At that point, I was like, ‘I’m already married, if I get ketchup on my dress it’s fine,’” said Zabihzadeh, who hails from Ellicott City, MD.
The lovebirds, both private practice attorneys who attended New York Law School, first met when they worked together as prosecutors in the Bronx.
“As soon as I met her, I was struck. That was it for me. It was head over heels, and everyone at the office knew that. It was a running joke about how crazy I was about her. But she seemed to be totally oblivious to it,” Doddy said.
In March 2020, when the courts shut down due to COVID, he finally confessed his feelings while they were at a friend’s apartment, “and we’ve been together ever since,” Zabihzadeh said.
“Literally, it took the end of the world to get the courage to finally profess my love,” Doddy joked.
Doddy comes from a long line of Yankees fans, including his 89-year-old grandmother, who was elated when she heard her grandson and his new bride spent their wedding day at the stadium.
“She thought it was the greatest thing ever,” he said.
She’s such a Yankee fan, he said, that “if it came down to adopting as a grandchild, Aaron Judge, and getting rid of her other 22 grandchildren, she really would think about it.”
