The fan giveaway at Citi Field was a pretty sweet one, a replica of the 1986 World Series ring. It was bright blue, gold and shiny and adorned with what were presumably fake diamonds.

Steve Cohen is willing to lose a cool $200 million-plus a year on the team to chase a real ring, but of course nobody’s giving away any real diamonds, even diamond chips.

While it was one of the better fan promotions, it was also a sad reminder that it’s been 40 years since the Mets last won a World Series. That’s a long time for any team, but especially for a team in the biggest market in baseball.

The Mets have made various efforts over the ringless past four decades, from the tight Madoff years to the free-spending Cohen years now, with the greatest attempt to win coming this very year, at least based on dollars spent. The Cohen Mets are into this team for about $375 million, as the Amazin’s hope to erase the memory of the debacle of 2025 with several big winter bets that transformed a roster they believed had grown stale.
