MESA, Ariz. — Anthony Volpe watched Sunday as the rest of his teammates packed their bags and left Steinbrenner Field for good with Opening Day on the horizon.
The Yankees shortstop has known since October that he would not be joining them to begin the season. But as he finishes off the rehab from his left shoulder surgery, the way he is feeling physically has made it even harder to stay patient.
“It’s been amazing to feel good,” Volpe said Sunday morning. “I feel like I’m as healthy as I’ve ever been.
“That’s what has been the hardest time mentally, because I feel good now. Whereas before, when you’re still working back and still recovering, it’s a little easier mentally because you know you still have work to do. But once you feel good, [you want to go].”
