As Molly McGee, the sagacious wife of pre-TV radio’s Fibber, advised, “Never trust a man who ends a sentence with a proposition.”

With that in mind, here’s the challenge: Find two things in this NCAA Tournament that have anything — anything — to do with our colleges as academic educational institutions that serve the best long-term interests of America.

And I’ll spot you the first one: Those walk-ons at the end of the bench who serve as practice dummies hopeful to make the box score in the final seconds of a blowout but otherwise the team members most likely to have attended classes in pursuit of a degree.

But that’s it. The NCAA Tournament, by design and blind-to-reality court rulings, has become the Firemen’s Picnic — no firemen invited nor wanted.
