PORT ST. LUCIE — Mark Vientos was asked Thursday about one of the Mets’ younger players and the challenges prospects typically face when making the transition into the majors when he said, “When it comes to approach, it’s knowing what you do well and making sure you showcase what you do well on a daily basis. That can be tough.”
He could have been talking about himself after he followed up his promising, 27-homer 2024 season with a mostly ugly season a year ago, when his production fell.
He enters this season without a concrete role on the Mets’ new-look roster, but still with the potential to contribute if he gets back to what he was able to do two years ago.
With Bo Bichette now at third base and Jorge Polanco taking a decent amount of at-bats at first, Vientos may be left looking for time at DH, as well as filling in at first.
