John Lynch said this week the 49ers are probing the theory that an electrical substation near their practice facility in Santa Clara, Calif. is causing injuries, even if it does appear to be improbable.

The San Francisco general manager told reporters on Wednesday that because the matter surrounds a player health and safety issue, they will investigate it.

“We aren’t going to turn a blind eye,” he said. “We’ll look into everything.”

Peter Cowan — a self-proclaimed board-certified clinician — first brought the possible situation to light in a report he penned earlier this month that’s since gone viral.

Cowan wrote that magnetic waves pouring out of a structure that sits just feet from where Niners players practice might be “systematically weakening the players’ collagen, leading to injuries under loads other teams routinely absorb.”

According to Cowan, there were several numbers that backed up his hypothesis.

Lynch didn’t seem sold on it all during his meeting with media members, though he nonetheless vowed to put eyes on it.

“I think you have to look into everything,” he said. “And so, our guys have been. We’ve been reaching out to anyone and everyone to see does a study exist other than a guy sticking an apparatus underneath a fence and coming up with a number that I have no idea what that means, that’s what we know exists. We’ve heard that debunked.

“So yes, we will look into it. We have. The health and safety of our players is of the utmost priority.”

Niners players have largely avoided the topic in public, but some have joked about it this season.
