The Mets won big by signing Bo Bichette, whiffing on Kyle Tucker

Understandably, the general consensus is that the Mets went 1-for-2 over a crazy 24 hours. But it says here that with one move and one non-move they batted 1.000.

The Mets surprised us all midday Friday by pivoting quickly and making what seemed like an out-of-nowhere $126 million, three-year deal for superstar infielder Bo Bichette.

While Bichette cost big bucks and may not stick around very long (more on that later), the Mets needed someone dynamic to change the narrative, someone to liven things up and someone to lengthen the batting order. Bichette’s résumé reveals one of the game’s toughest and most clutch hitters. His .381 batting average with runners in scoring position led the majors for anyone with 100 plate appearances. They need to do more. But this is a clear win.

Only 12 hours earlier, the Mets failed to lure consensus No. 1 free agent Kyle Tucker after bidding $220M ($55 million a year!) and seeing the impossibly good Dodgers get the player with a per-year record $240 million bid. The Mets undoubtedly felt stung to lose out to baseball’s best team a month after the same thing happened with their own star closer, Edwin Díaz.
