There were so many chances for St. John’s to pull away.
There was the 15-3 start. Multiple 10-point leads in the second half.
And when the game was on the line, Providence took it, sending the Johnnies to by far their worst loss of the season, a 77-71 setback at the Garden.
Providence closed on a 14-3 run as St. John’s wasted a 33-point, 15-rebound effort from Zuby Ejiofor. Red Storm players other than Ejiofor shot 12-for-55 from the field.
St. John’s had the ball up 10 when Joson Sanon missed a layup. Providence responded by scoring 11 of the next 13 points and was within one after an Oswin Erhunmwunse transition dunk with 4:42 to go. A Stefan Vaaks 3-pointer gave Providence the lead for good with 1:50 remaining. Sanon took the next two shots and missed both times, and Providence beat a high-major opponent for just the second time in seven tries.
The starting backcourt of Oziyah Sellers, Ian Jackson and Sanon shot a combined 5-of-30. Against his former team, Bryce Hopkins went 3-of-13 from the field. St. John’s also missed 13 free throws and was outscored in the paint by 18.

St. John’s came out red-hot, ripping off the game’s first 13 points. The 3-pointers were falling early — Ejiofor hit his first three tries.
It felt like the rout was on. But Providence responded with an extended 22-9 run and actually held a brief lead. St. John’s was settling for 3-pointers — 17 of its first 30 shots were from beyond the arc — and not making nearly enough of them.
Over the final 3:46 of the first half, St. John’s regained its footing on the strength of a 12-3 spurt. Ejiofor led the charge, scoring six points in the run. He was by far the best player on the floor in the opening half, tallying 18 points and 11 rebounds on his own.
The rest of the Red Storm, however, shot 7-of-31 from the field. Sanon and Jackson both struggled, going 1-for-11, as St. John’s shot 32.5 percent in the opening half. The Johnnies were plus-10 on the glass and turned 15 offensive rebounds (nine by Ejiofor) into 13 second-chance points.
Providence started the second half fast to get within two. St. John’s pushed the lead to 10 after a Lefteris Litopoulos 3-pointer but couldn’t sustain its play, and it was only a five-point game again with an even 12 minutes remaining.
