Jets’ chances at No. 1 draft pick look slim as final NFL week comes into focus

The Jets moved up one spot in the draft order, but their odds of landing the No. 1 pick are hanging by a thread.

They did go from No. 4 to No. 3 thanks to their ugly 42-10 loss to the Patriots and the Browns’ upset win over the Steelers, but Aaron Glenn’s team is still behind the Giants and Raiders, according to NFL Tankathon.

After the Raiders’ 34-10 loss to the Giants on Sunday, they own the No. 1 pick, and need a quarterback, like the Jets. It would seem unlikely the Raiders will trade down if they do in fact land the top selection.

The Jets and Giants are tied at 3-13, but the Giants’ weaker strength of schedule (.531) gives them the edge over the Jets (.548).

It is possible the Giants could beat the Cowboys next Sunday at MetLife Stadium — Dallas has already been eliminated from the postseason and has nothing to play for — which would enable the Jets to move up to No. 2 with a loss to the Bills.

The Jets could still wind up with the top pick, but would need the Raiders to beat the Chiefs and a number of results to go in their favor. Currently, the two-win Raiders own the strength of schedule edge over the Jets at .544.

It was another difficult day for quarterback Brady Cook. He was intercepted once and failed to throw a touchdown pass for the second consecutive game. He now has eight interceptions in three-plus games.

“I don’t know how many plays we had in that first half, but I think it was around 20 or maybe under that, and that makes it really, really hard, number one on the defense, and on yourself,” he said. “Because when you come back out in the second half, you’ve only had 20 plays so far the entire game. So, we need to figure out a way to sustain drives. And I say sustain drives, but ultimately score points. That’s what this is about.”

NFL Draft order

Jets rookie offensive tackle Armand Membou got into it with Patriots defensive tackle Christian Barmore late in the first half. Membou declined to comment on the brief skirmish.

“What happened was sorry ass number [70 doing] dirty ass s—t behind my back,” Barmore said.

Cornerback Qwan’tez Stiggers (knee), running backs Isaiah Davis (concussion) and Breece Hall (knee), and offensive guard John Simpson (knee) all left with injuries. Hall doesn’t believe his injury is serious and doesn’t expect to need further testing.
