ORLANDO, Fla. — David Stearns better be correct about run prevention and financial discipline, because what the Mets’ head of baseball operations is leading the majors in right now is annoying his fan base.

Twelve months ago he was a prince of the city, an architect of a joyous surprise run to the NLCS followed by grabbing Juan Soto away from the Yankees.

Today, Stearns might want to ask Bobby Valentine if he still has the fake nose and glasses to go incognito through the boroughs and Long Island.

This is what happens when you are the architect of the majors’ most disappointing team in 2025 and then steadily let among the few successful and popular players out of the door. Brandon Nimmo, Edwin Díaz and Pete Alonso are among the best players in franchise history. Now, they are no longer with the franchise.
