A Michigan-based candy maker is recalling two of its candy bars over the potential presence of undeclared nuts that could cause a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction, the Food and Drug Administration said this week.

Zingerman’s Candy Manufactory issued the recall on Oct. 24 – just a week before Halloween.

It warned its full-size Peanut Butter Crush bars may contain undeclared cashews and its full-size Ca$hew Cow bars may have undeclared peanuts.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to cashews or peanuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” the company stated.

It was not aware of any illnesses related to the recall.

The treats in question were distributed to retailers in Michigan and New York.

The peanut butter bars were packaged in yellow and purple boxes with Lot #174250.

The cashew bars came in light blue and yellow boxes labelled with Lot #174250.

The company said it issued the recall after it discovered the Peanut Butter Crush Bars were distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of cashews in them.

Its Ca$hew Cow bars were similarly distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of peanuts.

An investigation found “the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the production and packaging processes,” Zingerman’s said.

The company said it has taken steps to make sure the problem has been resolved.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled candy bars should return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
