Receiver-needy Giants open up cap space as trade buzz grows

The Giants stoked the flames of trade buzz Wednesday by freeing up salary cap space.

The front office converted part of the salaries for cornerback Paulson Adebo and safety Jevon Holland into signing bonuses, which freed up slightly more than $4.8 million in salary cap space, as first reported by ESPN.

On top of the $2.5 million that was already available, per NFL Players Association records, it positions the Giants to be more comfortable as the NFL trade deadline nears.

League sources told The Post that the Giants have surveyed the receiver landscape and could be poised to strike soon if the price is right.

It makes more sense for the Giants (2-4) to add a receiver who is under contract for 2026 and can complement a healthy Malik Nabers next season while growing alongside rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart — or even someone who has familiarity with head coach Brian Daboll’s playbook, like Alabama products Calvin Ridley (Titans) and Jerry Jeudy (Browns) — than it does to acquire a rental for an unlikely playoff push.

Of course, the extra cap space could just be a way of creating the breathing room that is going to be needed as the season progresses to get by on minor transactions like practice squad elevations and filling roster spots after players land on injured reserve.

The 49ers’ Jauan Jennings, Dolphins’ Jaylen Waddle, Saints’ Chris Olave, Raiders’ Jakobi Meyers, Packers’ Dontayvion Wicks, Jeudy and Ridley are some of the names thought to be available.

General manager Joe Schoen, Daboll, co-owner John Mara, senior player personnel executive Chris Mara, and senior vice president of medical services and head trainer Ronnie Barnes were huddled together with others after Wednesday’s practice. It was not an uncommon post-practice scene, though the contingent was bigger than normal.

Darius Slayton did not practice on Wednesday, meaning the Giants could be playing again Sunday with Wan’Dale Robinson and seldom-used Lil’Jordan Humphrey, Jalin Hyatt and Beaux Collins as their receivers.
