NYCFC set to host MLS Cup matches at Yankees Stadium

Yankee Stadium will see more playoff action this fall, just not for the Bronx Bombers.

New York City FC announced on Monday that it “intends to host home matches at Yankee Stadium” during the 2025 MLS Cup Playoffs, marking the first time in four years that the MLS club has hosted playoff matches in the Bronx.

The announcement came less than a week after the Yankees were eliminated from the postseason, opening up Yankee Stadium for NYCFC, which splits its home games between the Bronx Ballpark and Citi Field.

NYCFC has not hosted a home playoff match at Yankee Stadium since 2021, when they defeated Atlanta United 2-0 in the first round en route to the club’s first MLS Cup title.

New York City FC is guaranteed at least one home playoff date in the first round, which is a best-of-three series with the higher seed earning the right to host Game 1 and Game 3, if necessary.

NYCFC currently sits in fifth in the Eastern Conference and could finish as high as fourth, giving them home-field advantage in the postseason, or as low as sixth.

That will be determined on Saturday when they face Seattle in the final game of the regular season.

NYCFC wraps up the regular season at home, hosting the Sounders at Citi Field and looking to continue its strong play in the friendly confines of New York City.

New York City FC has 11 wins and five losses at home this season.

Scheduling has been tricky at times for NYCFC, especially during this time of year if both New York baseball teams are in action, but the club is likely down to its final few years of having to worry about the Mets and Yankees postseason runs impacting their own.

NYCFC is slated to move into a brand new soccer-specific stadium next door to Citi Field in 2027 when the project is slated to be completed.
